We have been hearing about the Wild Africa Trek for a while and it was definitely the highlight of our recent trip! We met up with our guides in Harambe and received our gear, a special vest equipped with a harness to help us navigate the treacherous foot bridges and allow us to get up close and personal with some of the locals like Hippos and Crocodiles.  We were also given a souvenir water bottle to use and to keep. After some instruction on what we would be seeing and doing, we were ready to proceed further into bush and begin our adventure.

We headed off thru Harambe towards Kilimanjaro Safaris as our guides described some of the local vegetation and architecture. Soon we proceeded through a gate and were off down a trail that most visitors to Harambe never see. We walked thru dense fern and bamboo forests as our guides further acclimated us to the lay of the land.

Next we came upon an overlook that’s part of the Kilimanjaro Safari tour, but we saw it from the other side of the pool. As we clipped our safety lines on we could see  below us the Hippos bathing in the pool. We were joined by another guide, a Hippo expert, who began to feed them some of their favorite treats to get them even closer to us and explained to us much about the Hippos in the preserve.

From there we proceeded through the preserve to one of my favorite parts of the adventure. We again clipped our harness to a safety line and made our way across two swaying, seemingly precarious rope bridges over the Safi River. In places the boards appeared broken and even missing, but we were strapped in and protected. Safety is the first concern with Disney I know, but it was hard not to have an Indiana Jones moment while crossing these really authentic swinging bridges!

After we made our way across the second bridge, we untethered, walked down to another lookover, hooked on again and were able to look of the edge at the crocodile filled pond you see on Kilimanjaro Safaris, but this time, no truck, no zooming by, just plenty of time to see these tooth filled reptiles a few feet away and observe them in their habitat.

Now that’s the way to get to know the locals! But soon it’s time to move on through the Reserve. We came to a beautiful overlook above the grasslands of the Savanna and paused to enjoy the breathtaking view. Shortly after we shed our specialized vest harnesses and boarded our customized open-air vehicle. Awaiting us was a refreshing cold towel, which was great on a hot Florida / African Savanna day. Our truck went along the same savanna route as the Kilimanjaro Safari vehicle does, but we would stop and take more time to observe the animals and of course we still had our guides pointing out highlights, nice touch!

At the end of our Safari Trek, we came upon our private safari camp where we could take a break, relax and enjoy a snack made up of the tastes of Africa while we observed the animals on the savanna.

Our snack actually fared more like a lunch and consisted of some incredibly good juice, and cold food offerings including melon balls, chicken curry,  shrimp, dried roast beef and ham, salmon and cream cheese, and a type of humus with pita bread. This was a very pleasant surprise and the food was African inspired and very good, it all came individually packed in a cool camp tin to further the “safari experience.

After our snack and a bathroom break at our safari camp we snapped a few last photos and loaded back on our private truck for the last leg of our safari and the trek back to Harambe. We passed the Cheetahs, the Lions and the Warthogs and headed back to “civilization”.

The tour lasts approximately 3 hours, groups are kept small, consisting of no more than 12 trekkers per safari. Pricing for this unique adventure will vary seasonally and starts at $189 per person. Park admission is required for tour participants. One of the guides will be taking photos throughout the trek, and a few days after you will receive by mail all the photos on a CD which is another memorable touch. We had an awesome time on our Trek and highly recommend this tour!

I’ve just returned from a short trip to Walt Disney World with my wife Leslie. While we were there this past weekend to enjoy some of the Epcot International Food & Wine festival I couldn’t help but notice that the Christmas decorations were beginning to go up!

We were staying at one of my favorite resorts now, the Contemporary, so even though we were there to enjoy some Food & Wine at Epcot, we had to walk over to the Magic Kingdom on Saturday morning. As soon as we walked down Mainstreet USA you couldn’t help but notice all the decorations already up. As we got to the hub, Leslie pointed out the music, she always notices and appreciates the Disney music, and yes they were playing Christmas music in the Magic Kingdom!

So now I have to say if you read my blog post last week, “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of Year” I was talking about the Food and Wine Festival, and I said that it was one of my favorite times of year. But now I really have to tell you that Christmas at Disney is really my favorite time of year! Okay, so I wish it wasn’t in December, I hate cold weather and love summer time, but I really am a nut for Christmas! I’m talking Clark Griswald, have the most brightly decorated house in the neighborhood, can we please open the presents now, nut for Christmas! So combine my favorite holiday with my favorite place, Walt Disney World and I’m in heaven. I just love seeing Disney transform into a Christmas wonderland! From the theme parks to the resort hotels, to all the special events and activities, there’s just nothing like it!

Let’s start with the Magic Kingdom. The Christmas tree is 26 feet wide and 65 feet tall and takes a 70 Ton Crane to erect! Here’s some fast facts from our friend Tony at Disney by the Numbers
• 3,000 wreaths are hung throughout the WDW property
• 15 miles of garland are to decorate at WDW during Christmas season.
• 1,500 Christmas trees are used all around the WDW property for decorating.
• 300,000 yards of ribbon and bows are draped over the WDW Christmas trees across property
• 8.5 million lights strung throughout Walt Disney World Resort
• 150 tractor-trailer truckloads of decorations for 24 resorts, 4 theme parks, Downtown Disney and other locations
• 100,000 poinsettias are used to decorate all of WDW landscape
• 8-foot towers of poinsettias, which resemble big red Christmas trees, have been a traditional favorite of guests
• 170 poinsettias are used to create each big red Christmas tree

That’s a lot of wreaths and garland! And that’s just the decorations! Special events like Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party where you can enjoy hot chocolate, cookies and it snows on Mainstreet, Epcot’s Candlelight Processional featuring a 300 person chorale and celebrity narrator, and Hollywood Studios’ Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights make the holidays magical at Disney!

Then there’s the resorts, each resort has it’s own theme and flavor for the holidays. Disney’s Wilderness Lodge has a Christmas tree with Elk horns and teepee decorations, the Yacht and Beach Club has a nautical theme and the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa has a life size Gingerbread house adorning the lobby are complete with gift shop inside!
So now you know a little bit about the holiday festivities at Disney, to learn much more be sure to visit us here at Travel with Rick in December to see what we’re bringing you for the holidays, you won’t want to miss it!

Wait a second, that’s the wrong holiday and the wrong time of year! I’m not talking about Christmas, but I am talking about one of my other favorite times of year at Walt Disney World, Epcot’s International Food & Wine Festival! For me, it’s easy to confuse Food & Wine with the most wonderful time of year. Think about it, there are close to thirty booths around the World Showcase promenade offering tasty morsels of food from around the world paired with fantastic wines, beers and even a frozen beverage or two!

Epcot’s International Food & Wine Festival, at six weeks is one of the longest running festivals around!  During the festival there will be culinary demonstrations by celebrity chefs and chefs from the many restaurants around Disney property, renowned authors from the food and beverage industry discuss their craft, Mixology Seminars, Book and Bottle signings and a six week long Eat to the Beat Concert series featuring a varied lineup of classic rock, soul, R&B, jazz and funk hit-makers, just to name some of the many attractions going on at Epcot.

To help you get acquainted with the festival, Disney has set up a Festival Welcome Center open daily from 9am to 9pm located in Future World between the Universe of Energy Pavilion and Mission: SPACE. There you can pick up a special Marketplace Discovery Passport, one of my favorite things about the festival. You can use it to help you “travel around the world”. It lists all the marketplaces around the promenade with each dish or beverage they offer. Each marketplace has a unique stamp for that country or location and you can have your passport stamped much as you would when you enter a country as you travel. There are also check boxes by each item so you can check off what you have and make notes on what you like or didn’t and what you may like to try again.

Many countries and marketplaces return year after year to the festival, and this year is no different. Returning favorites like Australia, Canada and Greece, and of course the staples like Italy and France are represented, along with many others. Debuting for the first time or returning after an absence this year is Scandanavia, Singapore, the Caribbean and for the first time Hawaii is represented. This goes along nicely with the fact that Disney just opened Aulani, a new resort in Ko Olina on the island of O’ahu in Hawaii. Also, some of the best food we tasted at this year’s festival came from the Hawaii marketplace, the Pork Sliders and Tuna Poke, but we’ll get to what we liked in a bit ;)

The Eat to the Beat Concert Series is another one of my very favorite’s things about the Food & Wine Festival. Each night of the festival, bands varying from Boyz II Men to Starship featuring Mickey Thomas to Hanson to Taylor Dane to .38 Special perform three free shows per night in the outdoor America Gardens Theatre. Each band plays two or three consecutive nights, three shows daily at 5:15 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. Check out the full line up of musical entertainment at this year’s festival by clicking here.

Okay, so what food and wine did we really like at this year’s festival? I’m glad you asked! This year, like last the Maple Glazed Salmon and Barley salad from Canada was awesome. One of the new dishes we really liked was the Boolgogi BBQ Beef with Steamed Rice and Kimchi from South Korea was really good! I’ve already mentioned the Kalua Pork Sliders and Tuna Poke from Hawaii, they’re awesome! Something you may not expect to find in an outdoor marketplace kind of festival was the Coq au Vin sur Gratin de Macaroni France, some of my friends said that was best in show this year for them.  A couple of definitely not-to-be-missed items are the Lobster & Scallop Fisherman’s Pie from Ireland, the Maine Lobster Roll from Hops & Barley is a big hit, and of course the Cheese Soup from Canada would cause a riot if it was ever taken away!

There are many premium events and experiences during the festival where you are able to meet winemakers, guest chefs and celebrity speakers. These special events vary in price and sell out quickly once they are announced. One of these, Party for the Senses is held on select Saturday Nights during the Festival guests will enjoy international cuisine, musical performances and even be entertained by Cirque du Soleil® acts. Each party will feature guest chefs and winery representatives where you wander among the tempting tasting stations of World ShowPlace.  I’ve often thought of attending a Party for the Senses and am looking forward to my first one on November 12, I’ll post a recap of the evening and let you know what I think.

So, maybe it’s not as magical as Christmas, but to me it’s pretty close! From around the beginning of October to about the middle of November, Epcot’s International Food & Wine Festival allows you to sample an incredible variety of cuisine and wines from around the world in a fun and relaxed setting around the World Showcase Promenade at Epcot all while  you’re visiting Walt Disney World and taking in all the magic of the theme parks and resort areas, what a great vacation!
